Close of flags STORYLINE: A few hundred Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon demonstrated outside a UN Commission's headquarters in Beirut on Friday, expressing solidarity with the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA. They waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans demanding further protection for refugees and support of UNRWA, outside of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. Israeli forces on Tuesday targeted at least two United Nations facilities, pushing forward with a crackdown the agency tasked with delivering humanitarian services to millions of people across the region. Riad Abu al-Ainain, current Fatah leader in Lebanon, condemned recent Israeli actions against UNRWA and demanded action from the international community. "What it (Israel) has done in destroying UNRWA facilities in Jerusalem is a criminal act," he said. Jamila Barakat, one of the demonstartors, demanded countries continue to donate and support UNRWA, as it remains "the only witness to the displacement of the Palestinian people." UNRWA provides aid and services — including health and education — to some 2.5 million Palestinian refugees in Gaza and the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem, as well as 3 million more in Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. It was established to provide aid to the estimated 700,000 Palestinians who fled or were driven out of what is now Israel during the 1948 war surrounding the country’s creation. Israel has long railed against the agency, accusing it of being infiltrated by Hamas and saying that some of its employees were involved in the October 2023 attack that triggered Israel’s two-year war in Gaza. UNRWA has denied allegations that the agency tolerates or collaborates with Hamas and said it took swift action against employees accused of taking part in the attack.
