On the night of October 24th, Commander Richard O’Kane takes USS Tang into a Japanese convoy at point-blank range. Twenty-two torpedoes fired, twenty-two hits. A record patrol seems certain—until the final Mark 18 electric torpedo malfunctions, broaches, curves, and circles back. The strike floods Tang’s aft compartments, killing men instantly and trapping the rest at 180 feet. With Japanese escorts overhead and a forward battery fire building heat and toxic gas, the crew faces an impossible choice: attempt ascent through the forward escape trunk using the Momsen lung, a device rarely practiced and never proven in combat. Those who reach the surface are not rescued by friendly forces—but captured by a Japanese frigate carrying survivors from the ships Tang has just sunk, beginning a brutal passage through secret interrogation at Ofuna and imprisonment at Omori until Japan’s surrender. This documentary follows the cause-and-effect chain—Mark 18 advantages, the rare gyroscope failure, the circular run, the only combat use of the Momsen lung in WWII, and the aftermath that the Navy kept classified for decades—while keeping the focus on strategy, doctrine, and the human limits of submarine war. #USSTang #WorldWarII #SubmarineWarfare
