My review of the Irish Gallowglass Ring-Pommel Longsword by Stephan Lockwood with historical analysis of the Oakeshott type XIX blade and its unique handling characteristics in relation to its use in Irish Clan Warfare by the fearsome gallowglass mercenaries, and why it was still relevant for these cut-centric long war swords to exist in the 15th century, in the age of full plate armor and strongly tapered armor-combating longswords. The blade has accurate transitions among 4 different cross sections on the blade, from the ricasso with fuller and hollow ground geometry, to hexagonal with fuller, to flattened hexagonal, eventually to a diamond near the tip. Good thickness and distal taper, from 6.4mm at the ricasso, to 4.4mm at midpoint and termination of the main fuller, to 3mm at 2" from the tip, leading to a very nimble and lightweight blade, yet proficient at sweeping cuts on lightly armored adversaries. Coming in at just under 3 lbs, with a 36" blade and 47" overall length. The iconic Irish ring pommel saved a lot of weight and placed the point of balance at 6.25" (16 cm) from the guard, making this lightweight longsword to do a lot of the work for you in cutting. The ricasso width is at 43.8mm, which is properly narrow for a type XIX sword. The edge has a slight micro bevel but is one of the sharpest among the 100 or so swords I own. It sliced 8 layers of towel plus my thick glove when I oiled the blade. Scary! The sword went through 50-lb pumpkins with minimal effort, with a rather rigid blade--rare for a cut-centric blade with fuller! The stiffness primarily comes from the thickness, distal taper, the hexagonal cross section, and the spring tempering of the 6150 spring steel.
