Autumn Action. 35028 Clan Line. The Atlantic Coast Express. 12th Oct. 2024.

The last mainline steam tour of the season to the Westcountry featured S.R. rebuilt Merchant Navy Class 35028 Clan Line traveling down the Southern route to Exeter and returning via the G.W.M.L. hauling the rescheduled Atlantic Coast Express. Timings were tight and traffic heavy on this lovely Autumn day and as a result locations were limited to two on Honiton Bank and two for the depart from Exeter. Most of Honiton Bank is now heavily overgrown compared to 20+ years ago when I first filmed here, today photographers are confined to very few locations offering any worthwhile view: the overbridge at Widworthy and the recently re-engineered Honiton Tunnel approach being virtually the only options towards the summit. Without any warning 35028 storms into view nearly catching us out!, blasts under the bridge and away towards the tunnel where again, no warning sounds are heard before she pounds by with the 47 on the back making the strangest of noises and offering little assistance. The return is captured at Exeter St Davids where the early cloud has cleared and left a low and intense sun which combines with the mother of all cylinder clearances to make visibility virtually impossible through a viewfinder! The final shot is in the most glorious of Autumn light as the big Bulleid makes light work of the easy grade out of Stoke Canon.
