In this episode, Dr. Horne discusses his new book, The Capital of Slavery: Washington, D.C. 1800-1865 (International Publishers, 2025). Dr. Horne also discusses his forthcoming work on Canada and the United States on comparative settler colonialism. Then, Dr. Horne connects the threads of settler colonialism, enslavement of Africans, scapegoating of the free Negro population in D.C. and Baltimore, the War of 1812, the burning of the White House in 1814, as well as armed struggle via Nat Turner, Denmark, Vesey, and John Brown, to our current state of affairs in the United States and around the globe. For instance, how Andrew Jackson’s right wing populism and brother-in-law of Francis Scott Key Roger Taney’s announcing of the Negro Seamen Acts in 1832, augured some of the precursors of fascism U.S. style including the exportation of a “globalized anti-blackness,” genocide against the Native Americans, and more. Dr. Horne also discusses the role of Russia in the 19th and 20th century, including the consequential sale of Alaska to the United States in 1867 including the Alaska Summit recently held between Trump and Putin, August 15, 2025 and its potential ramifications for the United States and NATO. Just as Dr. Horne mentioned the Russian River in Northern California as an “emblem to Russian claims” on the Pacific coast, let’s also point out that in Dr. Horne’s discussion about Cuba and the Moncada was held in “Russian Hall” on Campbell Ave in Vancouver, B.C., which would indicate the history of Russian claims north of the U.S. Border in Canada as well. Dr. Horne’s lecture from this occasion can be found here via the Activist News Network: • Solidarity Across Nations: Moncada's Revol... Dr. Horne also reaffirms his oft-repeated insistence that we need global analysis and analysis of class collaboration in order to understand not only history but our current geopolitical conjuncture as well. Probing the “purpose of NATO,” analyzing the escapade in Ukraine, and the rise of BRICS. To purchase the Capital of Slavery, click here: https://www.intpubnyc.com/browse/capi...
