Back on November 12th, 2022, the Reading and Northern Railroad announced on their Facebook page a rare daylight freight move: a loaded frac sand extra unit train bound for Tunkhannok PA. This train is one of the few that traverses the majority of the Reading and Northern's mainline, as loaded sand cars are brought from the interchange in Reading up the mainline north to Tunkhannok PA, where there is a newly established Fracking Industry. Fracking, also known as hydraulic fracturing, is a method of extracting oil and natural gas from shale rock that requires the use of sand and pressurized water, hence the need for specific sand unit trains. On this day the train consisted of 60 loads with a caboose and 5 locomotives providing the motive power. Additionally, this train began in Mohrsville yard, a few miles north of Reading, and traversed north to Tunkhannok. I personally only chased up to north of Hometown PA, as I had to complete something else later in the day. A big thank you to Reading and Northern for announcing this move to their dedicated and appreciative railfan community!! I hope you all enjoy this special mainline freight move! 0:00 Intro 0:45 Mohrsville Yard (Prep & Departure) 5:35 Miller's Crossing 7:08 Along Route 443 8:35 East Mahanoy Jct. 10:50 Lake Hauto Dr. 12:00 Outro Music in this video: Song: Straight Fuse Artist: French Fuse Licensed to YouTube by: YouTube Audio Library
