Matthew 1:1-17 Sunday Morning: The Backstory to the Birth of Christ Introduction: The Gospel of Matthew was written by a Jewish author, primarily for Jewish readers. As such, the opening of the book with the genealogy of Christ is entirely reasonable. Matthew's point is to demonstrate that Jesus is the long awaited Jewish Messiah. Jesus is the son of David and the son of Abraham. Matthew desired to show the continuity of the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants. Jewish salvation history is pictured in the recounting of the genealogy with its beginning in Abraham, its rise to greatness in David, and its sinking to shame in the deportation. With the coming of the Christ Israel's hopes are renewed and fulfilled. As the son of David, Jesus is the great King and in him the ancient promises to Abraham are realized. Covenant Promises, vs1-17. All God’s promises in His covenant with Abraham are fulfilled in Jesus (Gen 12:1-3; 15:1-21; 18:18; 22:18; 26:4; 28:14, cf. Lk 1:46-55, 67-79; 2:29-32). God’s promises to Abraham were to build a nation (to send the Messiah through Israel) and to bless the nations (sending salvation to the Gentiles) – all fulfilled in Jesus! All God’s promises in His royal covenant with David are fulfilled in Jesus (2Sam 7:12-17; Dan 7:13-14, cf. Lk 1:31-33; Rom 1:3; 2Tim 2:8; Mk 1:14-15; Lk 2:11; Jn 19:19-22; Acts 2:29-36; Eph 1:20-21; 1Pet 3:22). Jesus is the eternal King of Israel! Legal Identity, vs1, 6, 16. Matthew establishes the legal identity of Jesus of Nazareth. Through Joseph His legal father, Jesus possesses a genealogy connecting Him to David and Abraham, the throne and the patriarch. Unique Humanity, v16. This genealogy declares the uniqueness of the person of Christ. He was born of Mary and not Joseph. Jesus possesses a full but unique humanity (cf. Matt 1:20). Saving Grace, vs3-6, 16, 17. The genealogy shows God’s saving power and grace. The Messiah came through a line of moral failures, scandalized women and a rebellious nation. Conclusion: Christmas is about God’s answer for humanity’s sin, the birth of a real person with a real lineage just like each of us. Jesus is the true King of Israel; God’s promises are sure; God’s grace is abundant!
