Matthew 4:23-25 Sunday Worship: The Messianic Ministry of Jesus Introduction: Early on, Jesus was very popular, exceeding even John the Baptist (Jn 4:1). This was certainly true during the Galilean phase. 1) Jesus fulfilled scriptural Messianic expectations, v23. Popular messianic expectations included military and political glory for Israel. Scriptural prophecy described the arrival of the Messiah in terms of God’s saving grace exemplified in spiritual deliverance and physical healing (Isa 35:4-10). The coming Messiah was not like anyone anticipated (Isa 52:13-53:12; Acts 8:32-35). 2) Jesus’ Messianic ministry previewed eternal life in the Kingdom of God, v24. The healing ministry of Jesus verified His Messianic credentials (cf. Matt 11:3-6). It also demonstrated that the “Kingdom,” which had already arrived (cf. 3:2; 4:17), was certain to be fulfilled as a “new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (cf. Psa 102:24-28; Isa 65:17-19; 2Pet 3:13; Rev 21:1-5). Conclusion: During the Galilean ministry large crowds composed of Jews and Gentiles flocked to Jesus, v25. Through His preaching, the Good News of a glorious Kingdom was beginning to spread to “all the nations” (Matt 24:14). Repent and believe this Good News!
