Matthew 4:12-17 Wednesday Evening: The Galilean Ministry of Jesus Introduction: Over the course of perhaps a year the ministry of John the Baptist was coming to an end. Jesus’ baptism was a picture of His saving mission (3:13-17). Jesus had proved Himself a worthy Savior by His triumph over Satan in the wilderness (4:1-11). As our representative He succeeded where Adam had failed (Gen 3:1-24; Rom 5:12). Now God’s ancient prophesied purpose was unfolding (Gen 12:3; Isa 9:1-2). The “light” of life, joy, forgiveness, freedom and heaven was dawning on people who had lived in spiritual oppression and helplessness for Millenia. Sin brought darkness and death to people without hope and without God in the world (vs15-16). Now saving grace in the Light of the World had arrived (Jn 1:4-5,7; 8:12). The Message of Jesus, v17 Repent – What does this mean? This is the radical transformation of the entire person – mind, will, actions. You must turn away from the sin in your life. This is not a suggestion, it is a command. Repentance always includes faith in Jesus (Mk 1:14-15; Acts 2:38; 16:31; 17:30). For = This answers the question “why we should repent” (and believe). The Kingdom of heaven – How should we define this? (read Jn 18:33-37) Is at hand – The eternal kingdom has arrived (permanently, forever). God promised an eternal kingdom with the coming of the Messiah (2Sam 7:12-13, 16; Dan 7:13-14, 27). Conclusion: Sin had brought darkness and death to this world. Jesus commands us to repent and believe (cf. Mk 1:14-15) the good news that eternal life in God’s Kingdom is here!
