We found ourselves coming back up north through Maryland a couple weeks ago after visiting Six Flags (and THAT was an experience, but I digress...), and we wanted to stop someplace we hadn't been to before. A quick search online turned up this bar & arcade combination located in Columbia, right near the Merriweather Post Pavilion concert venue. Did they allow kids? Yes they did, until 8 PM at least. Score! Let's go check it out. And, to be honest, after visiting a number of underwhelming arcade bars over the years that want to be Barcade but don't quite meet the mark, it was a very pleasant surprise to step in here. This place was teeming with life, vibes, and bumpin' house music! Walking in the front door, you're greeted with a line of the latest and greatest pinball machines, ranging from Stern hits like Jaws, Uncanny X-Men, and King Kong to stuff like the Monster Bash remake and Jersey Jack's Avatar and Elton John. Elsewhere in the building, you've got classic fighters such as Street Fighter II, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Killer Instinct, and Marvel vs. Capcom. How about some Time Crisis 4? Maybe some San Francisco Rush The Rock? What, you want to go older school? The retro nook has a mix of verifiable classics like Ms. Pac-Man, BurgerTime, Galaga, Asteroids, and Frogger. And if you want to get your dance on, head over to the back left corner, where you can find a DDR SuperNOVA machine modder with Simply Love for hundreds of songs. The staff was absolutely awesome, keeping the party going even while the sun is blazing outside. They have a huge drink menu and tons of stuff on tap and in cans, as well as lots of bar snack favorites ranging from hot dogs and pizza to chickie tendies and mozzarella sticks. And if you're feeling brave (and of age)? Spin the wheel of shots. Will you get DK or Princess Peach? Ecto Cooler or Scooby Doo? Who knows? Jump to 5:41 to see it in action. And the artwork on the walls was absolutely awesome, with gigantic murals featuring pop culture icons from the 80s and beyond. From the Turtles to Batman and Joker, Cubone, Jessica Rabbit, Inigo Montoya, the Predator, and even the good old Angry Sun from SMB3 (hilariously appropriate for the weather that day!), everywhere you looked you'd find a vibrant, larger than life painting. Overall, we had a great time here, and even though we only had a couple hours to spend before hitting the road again, we can't wait to come back -- not to mention, with two other area locations, we've got even more retro goodness to check out in the future!
