“Penny Lane” was recorded between December 1966 and January 1967 over several sessions at EMI Studios. During that time, The Beatles were experimenting a lot with tape reduction and overdubs to work within the limits of four track recording. As the song developed, new parts were added while others were replaced, erased, or ended up buried in the final mix. Since the four tracks filled up quickly, they used track reduction, combining several instruments into one track to make space for more overdubs. This pushed the guitar into the background. As more overdubs were added (pianos, harmonies, handclaps, woodwinds, and the famous piccolo trumpet), the arrangement became quite dense. Because of that, Harrison’s guitar doesn’t stand out much, it works more as a rhythmic layer within the mix. If you listen closely, the guitar appears as short chord hits, mainly during the “Penny Lane is in my ears” lines, and in the sections where the song moves to "Bm". It is not a lead or strong rhythm part, it blends with the piano and adds small accents to the groove.
