“Two of Us” was recorded on January 31, 1969, and was written by Paul McCartney in late 1968. It is said that this song was written for Linda Eastman, even though it can sound like it is directed toward Lennon. “Two of Us” originally started as a rock-style song, as we can see in the Get Back documentary during the first days of the sessions at Twickenham Studios, where Paul and John sing into the same microphone. As the documentary goes on, we can see how McCartney turns this song into what we know today, with him and John on acoustic guitars, George playing a bass line on his Fender Rosewood Telecaster, and Ringo on drums doing fills on the floor tom. The group recorded the final take at Apple Studios on January 31, 1969, and this is the version we hear on the album Let It Be and also on the Naked version, with this lineup of two acoustics and one electric guitar playing the bass part. We can see this take near the end of Episode 3 of the Get Back documentary and also in the Let It Be film before the rooftop concert. ACOUSTIC GUITARS Paul and John follow an almost identical chord pattern. Each of them plays some chords in different inversions, and this is what makes the harmony sound fuller. After the opening riff, Paul plays the G chord with all four fingers in first inversion (with his ring finger on the D note). Later, when he returns to the G chord, he plays it leaving the B string open (John does the same every time the “We’re on our way home” part comes in). In the “You and I have memories” section, Paul plays the Bb and Dm chords in first inversion while John plays them in second inversion (1:35). This changes the order of some notes and makes these chords stand out more, because the harmony changes compared to the verses and the chorus. These are small details, but they make the harmony of the song sound more complete. GEORGE'S "BASSLINE" This bass line that George plays on his guitar is very interesting. First, he plays some slides on the fifth and sixth strings, and then he goes down using the notes B – A – G on the sixth string. He almost always uses these three notes, but changes the order and timing. This melody does not follow the vocal line and goes its own way, which gives the song a different feel because it does not sound tied to the acoustic guitar chords. A detail that went unnoticed for a long time is that at min 0:40, George changes from playing with his thumb to playing with a pick. This can be seen in the video of the song from the Let It Be film. For many years, most people thought he played only with his thumb, but the restoration of the Let It Be film allowed us to see more clearly what George was really doing at that moment.
