5 Bells - 10-1-20 in G#- (818.5 Hz) https://dove.cccbr.org.uk/tower/12923 Located between the villages of Ingatestone and Margaretting, is the quaint little church of St Margaret, right at the end of the appropriately named Church Lane. The church has a small wooden tower with a reasonably large base, and is home to a ring of five bells. This year marks the 30th anniversary of their augmentation to five, with the treble being cast in 1996 by the Whitechapel foundry, in memory of George R. L. Eve, who was the honorary general secretary of the Essex Association, from 1973 - 1983. Before 1996, these were a ring of four, cast by various founders between the 15th & 16th century. The oldest bell in the tower is the fourth (original third), cast by Robert Burford, circa 1410. The back four bells are all listed for preservation, as they rightly should. The tenor was cast by the 'Balcombe shield' founder, circa 1499 and is the only bell in the tower which hasn't been tuned and creates quite a characterful 'donk' when struck.
