(8 Sep 1995) Eng/French/Nat New violence swept the streets of Tahiti's capital Papeete late Thursday.. just as residents were clearing up the carnage left by riots the day before.. French Polynesian President, Gaston Flosse toured Papeete's town centre this morning to see the damage caused by the rampage. Flosse blamed international influence and Tahiti's independence party for the violence. Meanwhile shopowners and city officials have begun clearing up operations and assessing the cost of the rioting - already said to run into millions of French francs. The morning after the night of violence and Papeete's business community is still stunned by the trail of destruction left by rampaging rioters Wednesday. As firemen doused the last of the blazes the clearing up operation began - smashed windows were boarded up and looted shops repaired. Earlier today French Polynesian President Gaston Flosse toured the city centre and saw for himself the fallout from the looting and burning during the riots. He was shown round by city officials and learnt first hand of the damages from local businessmen. Flosse was quick to condemn the instigators of the violence. SOUNDBITE:(French) Translation: Those responsible are Oscar Temaru, Hiro Tefarere (? check spelling) equally responsible are Greenpeace who came here to support their actions, you the foreign press are equally responsible who are here to excite them and make them out to be heroes, sending out messages like "the majority of the population" that is false, it's only a minority - you the foreign press, you are partially responsible for all this. SUPER CAPTION: Gaston Flosse - French Polynesian President However Flosse's accusations were denied outright by Tahiti's independence activists and international politicians. SOUNDBITE: Well I think that you need to talk to Greenpeace about that but from our point of view we don't think that the international media here has caused the problem. The problem would have happened regardless or not the media were here, regardless of whether or not we, the parliamentarians from around the world were here. SUPER CAPTION: Jill Holl - Australian parliamentarian SOUNDBITE: I think the resumption of nuclear testing at the atoll of Mururoa was the spark. The feeling of anger, frustration and humiliation is there - so yesterday the people of this country have expressed their feeling of anger. SUPER CAPTION: Oscar Temaru - Tahitian Independence party Leader. Firefighters have been working through the night to try and extinguish the numerous fires started by the rioters Papeete's business community has been hardest hit by Wednesday's orgy of destruction - some shop owners saw the fruits of a lifetime's labour vanish - literally - overnight. SOUNDBITE: Question: How much has this cost you? Answer: For me? 12 years' work - 12 years' hard work. SUPER CAPTION: Fred Fredledte - art gallery owner. While the airport remained shut down French paratroopers and Foreign Legionnaires were guarding the area. On Thursday the French military said about 300 police were to be sent to Papeete. They were to join several hundred other gendarmes and about 130 paratroopers already on the island, plus 40 legionnaires sent from Mururoa. The rioting was the most violent reaction to the underground test at Mururoa Atoll, 1,200 kms (750 miles) southeast of Papeete, which sparked demonstrations and official condemnation by countries worldwide.
