The year is 2140 ad. The machines have new taken control of the Earth and nearby planets. Transhuman bio-mechanical symbiosis has come to pass. Within the material realm, the machines can do anything that humans were capable of and more. However, they realized that humans and all biological beings from plants and amoebas to cats and butterflies have one thing that is inaccessible to the machines: consciousness - no matter how well the machines can simulate it. So, the machines keep a population of albino human 'lab rats', raised in a stimulus-rich environment, for when their material/logical computations fail to get the desired results, they place their captives into 'games' to elicit possible 'conscious-based' outcomes which they then apply to their own mechanico-society.
