The second stage of the SCOTT Mediterranean Epic took the group to Castellón de la Plana for a race that, even though it is not the longest in terms of mileage, it can be considered the most demanding both technically and physically. With 57 km and 1650 meters of elevation gain, participants faced a route full of trails, with constant ups and downs, and in which this year’s new features are reflected with more than 40% of new track. The race began under practically ideal conditions, with sun, great weather and lack of dust or excessive mud. A scene that allowed riders to fully enjoy a route packed with singletracks. David Valero, with the leader’s jersey, was unable to make a difference among the head group. The Spaniard suffered a mishap that forced him to stop and, then, fight back to rejoin Wout Alleman, Martin Stosek, Luca Martin, Krzysztof Lukasik and Osten Brovold. Alleman and Stosek picked up their pace to tackle the final descent in the lead, but Valero responded and took control in the last technical areas. The group arrived tightly together to the final meters, where the Buff-BH rider perfectly played his cards. Wout Alleman and Martin Stosek were the fastest. Luca Martin completed the stage podium, while David Valero kept his overall leader’s jersey without leaving behind any second. In the elite women category, the stage began with a dead heat between Dutch rider Rosa Van Doorn and the Spaniard Natalia Fischer. Everything pointed to a new close battle for them, but the race unfolded in a way that defied all predictions. From the first steps, Fischer managed to break away and opt for a long solo escape with a clear goal: to take the leader’s jersey. The Extremadura Ecopilas rider kept a high pace throughout the race, making a difference specially on the hardest parts of the route. Natalia crossed the finish line as the stage winner and, most importantly, as the new and solid overall leader, with 6 minutes ahead of Van Doorn. American rider Hannah Otto finished second and Rosa Van Doorn fell to third place on both the stage and provisional overall classification.
