The American Civil War, fought between 1861 and 1865, was a defining conflict in the history of the United States. It arose primarily from deep divisions over slavery, states’ rights, and the future of the nation. The war pitted the Union states of the North against the Confederate states of the South, resulting in immense loss of life and destruction. Ultimately, the Union’s victory led to the abolition of slavery and the preservation of the United States as a single nation, though the social and political wounds of the conflict would take generations to heal. “The Bonnie Blue Flag” was one of the most popular marching songs of the Confederate States during the American Civil War. Written in 1861 by entertainer Harry McCarthy and set to the tune of an Irish folk song, it celebrated the Bonnie Blue Flag—a simple banner with a single white star on a blue field that became an early symbol of Southern secession. The song’s spirited lyrics and melody helped rally Confederate soldiers and supporters, making it almost as well-known in the South as “Dixie.”
