20. The Curse of Knowledge and How to Avoid It

This video discusses ways in which our knowledge of a subject can get in the way of our best attempts to communicate about it effectively. When we know a lot, we often take too much for granted on the part of our listeners or readers. We assume everyone knows what we know, and yet most people jdon’t; they lack the same background information that we have and we fail to take that into account. As a result, we overuse technical language, jargon and abbreviations, and in general do too little to reach or audience. And because of the curse, we don’t understand the audience. Here I illustrate several problems and recommend solutions.
