Climbing mountains to discover this epic Medieval Cathar castle ruin | Castle of Roquefixade

Our last visit here in Cathar Country (for now) is coming up. For this one we decided it would be a good idea to climb a mountain in the hot Southern France weather. At least the trek is worth it. Up on the limestone spur we find the medieval castle ruin of Roquefixade. It was built on top of a fissure, giving it its name (Rock Fissure). There are two distinctive parts to this castle too: the outer bailey and main castle. From the outer enclosure there are some scarce remains left. The main castle keep is sadly not accessible these days. We can give you some nice shots from the outside though and hope we’ll be able to access the heart of this Cathar castle sometime in the future.
