Ray Smith was one of the original members of SongShare. When he first arrived, he didn’t think of himself as a singer — not because he didn’t sing, but because he didn’t feel any confidence or investment in how it sounded. In this conversation, Ray talks about the moment something shifted: being told he didn’t have to sing, choosing to anyway, and discovering that caring about singing didn’t have to mean judging himself. He reflects on what it feels like to sing without knowing where a song is going, to take risks, and to stay with the experience even when things don’t work. Ray also speaks movingly about SongShare as a kind of family — a place of belonging created through repetition, shared vulnerability, and love of music. He describes how the confidence he gained singing each week led him to study music formally later in life, enroll in classes at Juilliard, and deepen a lifelong relationship with music simply for the joy of it. SongShare is a long-running group created and facilitated by Gary Stine, where people are invited to sing without judgment, performance, or pressure. The SongShare group inspired the 12-week program Singing for People Who Believe They Can’t.
