In Kenya, 69% of women in sport have experienced — or know someone who has experienced — gender-based violence. In Iten, widely known as the Home of Champions, incidents of violence and femicide have shaken spaces meant to nurture talent, discipline and excellence. Meet Coach Kanda. As part of the athletics community, he understands that performance cannot be separated from protection. These are not distant statistics — they reflect realities within the very system that produces champions. With support from UNFPA, the Centre for Enhancing Democracy and Good Governance (CEDGG) is working with coaches, athletes ,sports officials and the county government to strengthen safeguarding through education on the detection, prevention and response to GBV reinforcing reporting pathways, accountability mechanisms and a culture where silence is no longer the norm. Protecting athletes is how we protect the future of sport. #EndGBV #SafeSports
