Many autistic boys are misunderstood in school — especially in preschool and early elementary settings. What is often labeled as defiance, disruptive behavior, or noncompliance is frequently a child communicating overwhelm, unmet sensory needs, or a need for connection. In this video, I share what schools often miss when working with autistic boys — and how discipline can unintentionally replace understanding. As a special education teacher, early intervention provider, and parent, I’ve seen how quickly behavior is punished instead of interpreted. Autistic boys are disproportionately disciplined, removed from classrooms, or labeled as “behavior problems” when what they truly need is support.
