Today was our first really cold day on the Camino de Santiago. We started walking from Mansilla de las Mulas and within the first hour of the day we could sense the storm was coming! Starting the Camino later in the year (late September for us) poses it's own pros and cons. One of the cons being the higher chances of inclement weather. However we knew this and packed our waterproof gear. As prepared as we were, we decided to take shelter in a petrol station forecourt while the worst of it passed overhead. Roy, Charlotte and I waited it out while sharing a bottle of Coke and a bag of chips. Char is extremely sensitive to the cold so I think she suffered the most. Even though we were out of the rain, the temperature plummeted so we had to try our best to keep warm. After the storm passed we continued on and found Em and Court hiding in a small cafe. They were contemplating staying over in the small village but we decided to get to León. We just wanted to get out of the meseta. Plus we had a friend of ours, Rachel, who arrranged a private room for us in a hotel that looks after pilgrims. She stayed their the previous night and told us about it so we took her offer. On arriving in León we checked into the hotel, which was quite an odd room. It was like in a turret tower of an old building and we were at the top of the spiral staircase in a room looking over the old square. If anyone wants to know the name of the 'secret' hotel where you can get a pilgrim price for the rooms, leave a comment below!
