A two night escape to Katarapko Creek in the Murray River National Park, a short drive from Berri in the riverland region of South Australia. Being a national park, you need to jump online to book your campsite. The website has images of each campsite, as well as other useful information like how much sunlight the site receives and distance to the long drop toilets. $13/night is the booking fee. We ended up booking site 19, which turned out to be a fantastic site! It was HUGE!! Over 100m long private sandbar, a natural boat ramp to launch the Stessl 450 Apache Pro and room for 5-6 families easily. Site 19 is just upstream from a man made stone weir, which holds back water from the main river Murray flowing in to Katarapko Creek, unfortunately this meant that we only had around 500m of the actual creek to play in before we hit the main river. There are 55 campsites available in the park, and all of them looked to be well spaced. Our closest neighbours were 500m away, and there are enough trees to make it a very private getaway. Make sure you pack the canoes or bring a boat. In the warmer months, try for yabbies, otherwise the creek itself is known for great fishing with Callop, Murray River Cod and Carp all frequently caught. We set up our Darche Panorama 2 Roof Top Tent plus annex for the kids, and pulled the 270 Eclipse Awning out, too. Luckily we did, as we had a few showers of rain that made us jump into bed early on the first night. Make sure you bring your own firewood in, being a national park, you are not permitted to collect firewood within the park. No dogs are allowed either, so leave your fury friends at home. The road in is fantastic and appeared to be new, with a lot of culverts and overpasses allowing you to get through the mud plains with ease. Some sites may be difficult to access in wet weather, and the staff who work for the park may call you if the access may be cut off due to weather. We had a phone call from them, but after walking into our site first, it was an easy drive in. Song belongs to the Silversun Pickups. Lazy Eye is the name of the song :)
