Pan of US and Iraqi troops walking outside station STORYLINE: Iraqi police said that six people were killed after US forces engaged in fierce fighting with gunmen in two Sunni-dominated Baghdad neighbourhoods on Tuesday. At least one of the six killed was an Iraqi soldier. The clashes occurred in the Sheik Omar and Fadhil areas of the capital. An American helicopter involved in the battle in the Sheik Omar neighbourhood came under ground fire but was not shot down, a senior US military official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because US officials were still investigating the incident. AP Television footage showed a US helicopter hovering over the area, and humvees were parked in streets where the clashes had occurred. A small billow of smoke was rising from the side of one building. Unidentified wreckage could also be seen on one of the roads in the Sheik Omar neighbourhood. Four civilians were injured in the clashes, according to police and hospital officials. US and Iraqi forces sealed off the area, they said. Meanwhile, the drive to fight Shiite Mahdi Army militiamen out of Diwaniyah, a farm-belt city south of Baghdad, continued. The joint US-Iraqi operation, named "Operation Black Eagle," to retake the city took shape after a three-month crescendo of violence in which at least 58 people were killed or kidnapped. The drive began before dawn on Friday. On Monday Iraqi troops swept through central parts of the city, recently abandoned by civilians due to clashes, on a routine search sweep. US helicopters were also searching parts of the city from the sky.
