Wide of news conference STORYLINE US warplanes attacked suspected militiamen wielding shoulder-fired rockets on Saturday in the second day of fierce fighting between US and Iraqi forces and Shiite gunmen south of Baghdad, US and Iraqi officials said. At least one civilian was killed and five were seriously wounded when an American tank fired on their house in Diwaniyah, 130 kilometres (80 miles) south of Baghdad, Iraqi police and hospital officials said. The victims had to be pulled from the rubble of their home, and evacuated to Diwaniyah hospital, police said. The US military had no immediate comment on Saturday on any casualties among civilians or soldiers in Diwaniyah. Saturday's airstrike was based on a tip-off from area residents who told Iraqi military officials that militiamen were operating in the area, the US military said in a statement. The strike targeted "illegally armed militiamen using shoulder-fired rocket propelled grenades," the statement read. Leaders of the joint US-Iraqi forces and Iraqi police held a news conference on Saturday to outline the grounds for the operation in Diwaniyah. Major General Oothman Farhood, Commander of 8th Iraqi Army Division told reporters he personally received a telephone call from the Governor of Diwaniyah asking for military intervention because, according to the governor, "police forces had lost control of the city." The operation began before dawn on Friday when US troops swept into the troubled, predominantly Shiite city of Diwaniyah, killing three militia fighters and capturing 27 in the first day of the assault, the military said.
