Libby was off to a movie with some of the women from the park. In this episode, Steve provides an update on the Power Station. After 6 months of use, it has become apparent that the power station is a vital component of our RV equipment. We have tested the rig and discovered the base system (control panels, etc.) uses 1 Kw of power per day. If we add the fridge and water heater to the mix, we are up to 10 Kw of power per day. That does not include lights, fans, other appliances, Wi-Fi, charging devices, etc. Our power station has 2 Kw available. We have 2 x 200 w portable solar panels that charge the power station (on average) 1 Kw per day. Our rig has 2 Series 27 batteries with 96 Ah each, for 192 Ah available. The rig's base systems use 86 Ah in 24 hours. These batteries should never go below 50%, and the two batteries supply the needed power. Our rig has 2 x 200 w solar panels on the roof that run through a controller to the rig batteries. On a sunny day, those panels keep the rig batteries between 90% and 100% charged. When boondocking, we run the fridge and water heater on propane. We let the rig batteries and solar panels maintain the critical rig systems. We use the power station for all other electrical needs, including cooking, bread proofing, charging devices, lights, computers, Wi-Fi, etc.! For our lifestyle, especially with the boondocking we have fallen in love with, we cannot make the trip without the additional power source. It is too easy to destroy the rig batteries by drawing more power than they can supply, causing them to spend too much time below 50% charge. This information will help others decide their needs based on the type of camping they desire.
