“If we can't bring the kids to the kitchen, maybe we can bring the kitchen to the kids.” —Carolyn Federman Food education rarely gets the attention it deserves, even though it influences health, learning, and equity from childhood on. Without hands-on experience, access to fresh food only goes so far. This conversation brings the issue back to what actually works. Carolyn Federman explains how observing the limits of traditional teaching kitchens led to Charlie Cart, a mobile solution now used in 47 states. Her background in food systems, education, and community work shaped a model that meets kids where they are and gives educators tools that last. Watch this episode to see how practical design, food justice, and education intersect in real communities. Why food education is critical to food access and health outcomes How Charlie Cart brings cooking lessons into classrooms and beyond The connection between culture, family meals, and lifelong habits What it takes to manufacture a sustainable, kid-proof mobile kitchen How libraries, hospitals, and food banks use food education programs The vision for making food education part of everyday learning Meet Carolyn: Before starting the Charlie Cart Project in 2014, Carolyn Federman led Alice Waters’ Edible Schoolyard Project, developed programming with the Jamie Oliver Foundation, co-founded the Berkeley Food Institute, and co-produced UC Berkeley’s Edible Education course with Michael Pollan. She is a proud emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Berkeley Public Library Foundation, and the author of New Favorites for Cooks (TenSpeed Press 2018), based on children’s favorites from the Carlie Cart Project curriculum. Carolyn is the parent of two fabulous kids (who love to cook and eat!)
