Today, we’re taking a stroll inside Bongeunsa, a 1,200-year-old Buddhist temple located right in the middle of Gangnam. Unlike most temples in Seoul that sit on mountain slopes off the city center, this one is much easier to reach: just steps from the subway and right across from the busy COEX mall. The grounds are larger than you’d expect for this neighborhood: several prayer halls, shaded paths, and small corners where you can sit for a moment and breathe. If you visit between June and early September, you’ll catch the lotus flowers in full bloom. You’ll also spot a sea of white lanterns hanging overhead each holding handwritten wishes, and the tall Mireuk statue watching over the grounds. If you’re curious to learn more, Bongeunsa also runs Templestay programs where you can try meditation and learn a bit about temple life. I fell in love with the contrast of Bongeunsa Temple's warm wooden halls set against a skyline of shiny high-rises. One minute you’re on a busy Gangnam sidewalk; the next, you’re hearing moktak beats carry across a quiet courtyard. It’s the perfect kind of place to reset without leaving the city. I hope you enjoy this mindful pause on the temple grounds in the heart of Seoul. If you like exploring cities at walking speed, tap Subscribe and keep walking with me across Asia.
