Conditional Sentences Conditional sentences, also known as if-then sentences, express a possible condition and its potential result or consequence. These sentences typically consist of two clauses: a dependent clause that begins with "if" and expresses the condition, and an independent clause that expresses the result or consequence. There are four main types of conditional sentences: Zero Conditional: This type of conditional sentence expresses a general truth or fact that is always true, regardless of any specific conditions. It uses the present tense in both the dependent and independent clauses. Example: If you heat water to 100 degrees Celsius, it boils. First Conditional: This type of conditional sentence expresses a condition that is possible or likely to happen in the future, and its result or consequence. It uses the present tense in the dependent clause and the future tense (or "will + base verb") in the independent clause. Example: If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home. Second Conditional: This type of conditional sentence expresses a hypothetical or unlikely condition and its result or consequence. It uses the past tense in the dependent clause and "would + base verb" (or "could + base verb") in the independent clause. Example: If I won the lottery, I would buy a house. Third Conditional: This type of conditional sentence expresses a past condition that did not happen, and its hypothetical result or consequence. It uses the past perfect tense in the dependent clause and "would + have + past participle" in the independent clause. Example: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
