Intro to Model-Based PID Tuning webinar presented on behalf of ISA - Tampa Chapter. Presenter: Joe Burns, President, JLB Controls, Inc. Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control is widely used to regulate variables such as flow, temperature, pressure, etc., in continuous processes. As physical systems evolve, PID controllers need to be re-tuned, creating an ongoing challenge. PID tuning is often treated as art, rather than science, and the "Guess & Check" tuning method is very common. Each iteration takes valuable time, disrupts the process, and results depend heavily on the tuner's intuition. This webinar introduces "Model-Based Tuning" as an alternative, which focuses first on understanding the system, then using that knowledge to derive tuning values. A simple, broadly effective, PID tuning procedure is presented, with a basic explanation of underlying theory. The concept is put to work with a live example, using software to quickly model a process and tune a PID loop.
