Prince Rama Varma, accompanied by his top team of Sri S.R.Vinu, Sri B.Harikumar, Dr.S.Karthick and Payyannur Sri Govindaprasad, gave a heart warming tribute to M.S.Subbulakshmi Amma and to Varmaji's own grandmother Princess Lakshmi Bayi on their combined birth centenary celebrations, in September 2016. Braving a dreadful cold and cough (and a hartal in town) Varmaji and his team offered the gathering an unforgettable and fascinating experience, by paying rich tributes not just to the two Birthday Girls, but to a host of great composers and musicians, all the way from the 1400s to the 20th century! The lyrics and their meaning come alive in Varmaji' able hands and inquiring mind, with the result that the audience goes home with a heady mix of aural pleasure, visual entertainment, spiritual enlightenment, a deeper insight into the spirit of the compositions and a greater amount of respect and intimacy with the composers who left us these great compositions. Following The Great Bruce Lee's policy of "being like water", which takes the form of any container it is poured into; yet remaining essentially the same, Varmaji went all out to keep the focus on M.S.Amma and yet remained totally himself all the way! When Varmaji speaks, I always feel that we just get to see the tip of the iceberg and in this video, we get to see him hint at that himself, when he talks about Arunagirinathar, his life and his music. I absolutely love this song too; especially the line Deepa Mangala Jyothi.
