The Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Central Kitchen Meal Model (CKMM) was implemented to help schools that are struggling to attract canteen stallholders and have severe shortages of functioning stalls. It is not intended to be scaled to all schools, said Minister of State for Education Jasmin Lau. She noted that the model has produced some positive outcomes, but MOE is taking “an open and flexible approach” and will try out a range of options. She added that schools going through the transition to the new model have been actively supporting stallholders, several of whom have joined CKMM operators and now have more stable income. Ms Lau also said the number of gastroenteritis incidents in schools has averaged six cases a year over the past three years, across all food service models. The causes of two recent suspected incidents at River Valley Primary and North View Primary are still being investigated. Ms Lau was answering MPs’ questions in parliament on Tuesday (Feb 3).
