Welcome back, Classical MIDI fans! Today's selection might be one of the most famous movements from a string quartet ever written -- though once again, that's probably NOT how you might know it! Arranged from the second movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11, Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is icon of 20th Century music, it has entered the collective consciousness through its frequent use as a soundtrack in movies, at funerals, and to commemorate solemn events in history. And this rendition might not even be the most famous arrangement - Barber himself crafted another in 1961 which set the text of the Agnus Dei for chorus with organ or piano accompaniment. But for me, the best is still just the sound one gets from the full string orchestra. There's something about the plaintive cry that the cellos are making as we approach the climax of the piece, sounding at the highest dynamic in the extreme upper end of their register. The intensity of the emotions it evokes in its listeners have led it to be declared in one vote on BBC Radio as "the saddest classical work ever", but for me the emotion isn't necessarily "sad" -- it's an intense feeling of mourning and loss. I remember hearing it for the first time, as a child, watching the NY Philharmonic on PBS under the baton of Leonard Bernstein, weeping by the end. Little did I know that the performance itself was in commemoration of the composer's death, earlier in the year. This particular performance certainly is inspired by Bernstein's interpretation, felt by some to be a bit overindulgent with the tempo. But I myself love the intensity a slightly slower tempo provides, particularly in how it seems to emphasize the dissonances more than the resolutions. I was fortunate enough to find a scan of his own notes from the performance on the NY Philharmonic website to refer to, and it was a prime example to those who might dismiss Lenny as a "showman" in how wrong they truly are. His markings are precise, disciplined, and clearly founded on the composer's own markings. I once had the privilege, just before he himself died, to see Lenny in rehearsal with the BSO, and his approach with the orchestra was nothing short of surgical. Sure, once the audience was in the house he would "perform", but the work was done in rehearsal, and he was steadfast in his precision with the musicians before him. My hope is that this rendition does credit not only to the composer's work, but his inspiration as well. From a technical perspective, this performance was relatively straight-forward, but it allowed me to highlight the richness and depth of the sound that the Modern Scoring Strings library can offer. As I mentioned above, one of the key elements in this piece is the sound the cellos provide at the climax, playing well into the treble clef. Many lesser libraries do not sample the instrument section that high, but in doing so you lose the plaintive quality that register can provide. MSS doesn't disappoint here, providing true samples even beyond the G6 top note in the score, and that makes all the difference in the tone. I also love the richness of the low end that the double basses provide, which is sonorous without being too "boomy". I hope you enjoy this result, and let me know in the comments if you have any suggestions on how to make it even better! As always, all parts are recorded by myself within Cubase 12 Pro, then mixed and mastered by myself as well.
