Mexican landscape architect Mario Schjetnan, co-founder of the Mexico City-based firm Grupo de Diseño Urbano (GDU) and who believes there is a “human right to open space,” provides a compelling reflection on his family’s history, his time studying at University of California Berkeley in the late 1960s, and his subsequent return to Mexico where he developed one of Latin America’s most influential landscape architecture and urban planning practices. Mexico’s history and culture inform all the work he and his firm undertake, and their projects include some of the country’s most significant and important cultural sites. Schjetnan and GDU won the 2025 Cornelia Hahn Oberlander International Landscape Architecture Prize. Learn more: https://tclf.org/prize. Schjetnan’s work embraces Mexico’s “mosaic of cultures,”; his projects, including parks, gardens, and cultural institutions, promote “livability,” sustainability, and evolve over time. Schjetnan incorporates ancient Mexican agricultural techniques and typologies while embracing Modernism. His practice is rooted in Mexican history and culture and supports vital ecosystems and ecologies. Significant projects include those in Mexico, United States, Latin America, China, and the Middle East.
