In the first episode of our new mini-series, “Biblical Images of God Pt 1: Living Water,” Walking The Text founder Brad Gray unpacks the idea that how we see God shapes how we relate to Him. While Westerners often describe God through abstract qualities like love or holiness, the Bible offers something richer: vivid, tangible imagery that invites us into a deeper understanding of His character. One of the most evocative images is that of “living water.” In this episode, Brad explores the profound significance of this metaphor, tracing its origins in the Hebrew Scriptures and revealing how Jesus redefined it to illuminate God’s heart and purpose. By delving into this imagery, you’ll uncover a fuller, more vibrant picture of who God is and how He seeks to transform your relationship with Him. The Hebrew Scriptures refer to God as living water twice, both in the book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah, a prophet from a town nestled in the rugged Judean wilderness, paints a powerful picture of God’s life-giving presence by invoking the lush oasis of En Gedi. En Gedi, with its cascading waterfall and verdant surroundings, is a striking contrast to the stark desert landscape—a sanctuary of vitality and renewal. For Jeremiah’s audience, this image of living water symbolized God’s sustaining power in the barren seasons of life. Yet, Jeremiah’s prophetic words also offer a sobering challenge: why would anyone choose the stagnant, lifeless water of broken cisterns when the source of pure, flowing life is freely available? It’s a question that echoes across the centuries, urging us to consider where we seek our sustenance. Just as Jeremiah portrays God as living water, Jesus expands and fulfills this metaphor in the Gospels. In John 4 and John 7, he boldly declares Himself to be the ultimate source of living water, capable of quenching the deepest thirsts of the human soul. Through this claim, Jesus not only affirms God’s desire to meet us in our dry and weary seasons but also reveals his mission to offer renewal and abundance to all. This episode invites you to experience the fullness of God’s provision and challenges you to reflect that life-giving spirit outward. By the end of “Biblical Images of God Pt 1: Living Water,” you’ll walk away with a renewed understanding of who God is and a mission to carry His hope into a world that is parched and longing for refreshment. https://bit.ly/biblicalimagesofgodpt1 Thanks for watching and hit that subscribe button!
