PROJECT: 50cm x 60cm Abstract Expressionism Still Life THEME: "Totem" Vase & The Power of Ma (Negative Space) STYLE: Heavy Slab Impasto (Bram Bogart / Nicolas de Staël influence) --- [YOUTUBE TITLE] Sculpting with Space: Heavy Slab Impasto & The Power of 'Ma' (DIY Tutorial) --- [YOUTUBE DESCRIPTION] In this 25-minute session, I demonstrate a high-relief technique for a 50cm x 60cm abstract expressionism still life. We aren't just painting a subject; we are building a "totem." The focus here is the intentional interpretation of 'Ma'—the Japanese concept of negative space. By keeping the perimeter a stark, white-on-white void, we let the central heavy impasto vase breathe. I’ll show you why I skip the expensive art-store gessoes in favor of a DIY "Slab" mix that holds incredible ridges and valleys. *Materials & Ingredients:* Kaolin (China Clay) - England PVA Glue (Top of the line) Acrylic Exterior/Interior White Matte Emulsion Acrylic Primer Boutique Block Indian Ink Staedtler LMG 5b-11b Graphite (for the stencil foundation) --- [YOUTUBE SCRIPT SEGMENTS] 1. Introduction: The Totem & The Chemistry (0:00 - 5:00) "Welcome back to the studio. Today we’re working on a 50x60cm piece. We’ve established the central vase totem using a Staedtler 5b-11b graphite stencil. The core of this video is the chemistry: mixing English Kaolin clay with PVA and matte emulsion. We’re going for that heavy Bram Bogart 'slab' look that store-bought gels just can't achieve." 2. Defining the Ma (5:00 - 15:00) "Now, look at the perimeter. In a Nicolas de Staël-inspired block composition, we’re treating the surrounding area as 'Ma'—the void. It’s a straight white matte area. We’re using the negative space to push the physical weight of the totem forward. By keeping the edges clean but textured, the space becomes as important as the subject itself." 3. Breaking the Tension (15:00 - 20:00) "To keep this massive white area from feeling flat, I’m introducing a touch of boutique Indian ink. We’ll do some minimal splatter and spray to break up the void just enough to lead the eye. It’s about 'Art Brut'—keeping it raw, gritty, and intentionally unrefined." 4. The Final Relief (20:00 - 25:00) "Check the side profile. See those valleys? That’s the Kaolin clay holding the memory of the gesture. This is sculpture on canvas. Forget the expensive boutique gesso; build your own, get the texture you want, and let the space do the work. This is Jalen Wall Art—stay creative." --- [TECHNICAL SPECS FOR REFRESHER] *Texture Style:* Slab-like pictures. *Philosophy:* Spatial void (Ma) surrounding a primary vertical anchor. *Application:* DIY heavy relief with matte finish.
