Me playing the organ at Holy Trinity Church in Hull - said to be the largest organ to be found in a parish church in the United Kingdom! Some pipework in the organ dates back to the mid 18th century when a 2 manual instrument was first installed. In 1845 the organ was rebuilt and enlarged by Forster and Andrews who also rebuilt the organ in 1855, 1876, 1900 and 1908. The organist Norman Strafford always felt that the organ was now powerful enough for the huge church so in 1938 the organ was totally rebuilt by the John Compton Organ Company Ltd. Electric action and detached console featuring the Compton patent luminous stop control were added along with much new pipework including a very powerful Tuba stop and the Compton patent 32ft polyphonic bass. The specification reads: PEDAL Sub Bass 32' Dulciana 16' Open Wood 16' Open Metal 16' Bourdon 16' Echo Bourdon 16' Violone 16' Contra Bass 16' Quint 10.2/3' Octave Wood 8' Principal 8' Flute 8' Dolce 8' Prestant 4' Flute 4' Quint 5.1/3' Fourniture VI Contra Trombone 32' Posaune 16' Bass Clarinet 16' Fagotto 16' Bombarde 16' Trombone 16' Trumpet 8' Bassoon 8' Clarinet 8' Choir to Pedal Great to Pedal Swell to Pedal Swell Octave to Pedal Solo to Pedal Solo Octave to Pedal Octave CHOIR Bourdon 16' Double Dulciana 16' Bell Gamba 8' Open Diapason 8' Lieblich Gedeckt 8' Dulciana 8' Lieblich Flute 4' Dulcet 4' Gemshorn 4' Nazard 2.2/3' Twelfth 2.2/3' Fifteenth 2' Piccolo 2' Tierce 1.3/5' Acuta II Contra Fagotto 16' Fagotto 8' Clarinet 4 Swell to Choir Solo to Choir Tremulant GREAT Bourdon 16' First Diapason 8' Second Diapason 8' Third Diapason 8' Gamba 8' Harmonic Claribel 8' Stopped Diapason 8' Dulciana 8' Quint 5.1/3' Octave 4' Principal 4' Waldflote 4' Dulcet 4' Twelfth 2.2/3' Fifteenth 2' Super Octave 2' Mixture III Cymbale II Contra Posaune 16' Tromba 8' Posaune 8' Clarion 4' Choir to Great Swell to Great Solo to Great SWELL Bourdon 16' Viola da Gamba 8' Geigen 8' Rohrflote 8' Salicional 8' Voix Celeste 8' Vox Angelica 8' Geigen Octave 4' Hohl Flote 4' Fifteenth 2' Mixture IV Sesquiltera II Contra Fagotto 16' Fagotto 8' Trumpet 8' Hautboy 8' Horn 8' Clarion 4' Sub Octave Unison Off Octave Solo to Swell Tremulant to Flues Tremulant to Reeds SOLO Viole d' Orchestre 8' Clarabella 8' Viole Celeste 8' Concert Flute 4' Orchestral Oboe 8' Double Clarinet 8' Clarinet 8' Vox Humana 8' Tuba 8' Tuba Clarion 4' Sub Octave Unison Off Octave Tremulant (to light wind) BOMBARDE (played on choir manual) Double Diapason 16' Diapason 8' Octave 4' Fourniture IV Cymbale IV Contra Posaune 16' Tuba 8' Posaune 8' Tuba Clarion 4' ACCESSORIES 10 thumb pistons to Choir 10 thumb pistons to Great 10 thumb pistons to Swell 8 thumb pistons to Solo 4 general thumb pistons 6 toe pistons to Pedal 6 toe pistons to Great 6 toe pistons to Swell 4 pedal coupler canceller thumb pistons 2 toe piston sustainers - choir and solo 1 general cancel thumb piston 1 balanced expression pedal - swell 1 balanced expression pedal - solo 1 balanced expression pedal - general crescendo 12 ventil switches Voltmeter For this first video I am playing the hymn 'Praise Him, Praise Him!' which shows off the power of this organ. The powerful Tuba stop on the bombarde division (added by Compton in 1938) can be heard at the beginning and at various points in this hymn. Many thanks to the church officials for allowing me access to this wonderful Compton organ.
