Upon landing at Hawthorne Muni Airport (KHHR) near LAX, an Embraer EMB-505 — Phenom 300 — hydroplaned off the runway and thankfully hit a fence, preventing it from launching onto a busy road. Thankfully all seven occupants were safe — that is the most important aspect of this accident. On December 27, 2022 at 1830 Pacific time N16DF, flying in from Jackson WY, is making an approach to Runway 25. RWY 25: 4956 Ft - Total Runway Length (TORA) 460 Ft - Displaced threshold 4193 Ft - Landing Distance Available (LDA) • Runway wet - not grooved which results in more standing water on the surface, and touchdown was nearly 1,000 feet beyond expected TD (from ADS-B — if correct). A rule of thumb: Planes will hydroplane at 9 x √Main Tire PSI — so with a typical tire pressure of 120 PSI — you can expect hydroplaning at a GS of 90-95 KTS — about the touchdown speed. A good reminder to keep your tires at the rated pressure to minimize occurrence. We won't know the specific causes until the NTSB report is final, however similar accidents point to: insufficient runway length for the weather conditions (wet), touchdown beyond the expected point by a substantial margin, and perhaps excess speed over the threshold. Having personally hydroplaned in our Aerostar 700 at Dulles (IAD) — I found out a pilot quickly becomes a passenger with virtually no control once that occurs. My Aerostar was not damaged, however it could have been a different situation. In similar situations, pilots should evaluate performance on contaminated runways and look for alternative airports when in doubt.
