01.12.2025 Prof Eric Heinze (Queen Mary University of London) speaks on "Democratic Citizenship and Online" expression as part of the event Resilient Democracy Online: Reimagining Civic Debate on Social Media. About the event How can democratic debate thrive in an era of online polarisation, shifting political norms, and increasingly complex information ecosystems? Resilient Democracy Online is a three-day event hosted in collaboration with BRIAS as part of the Horizon Europe project SoMe4Dem – Social Media for Democracy. The programme brings together eight partner institutions, including the Brussels School of Governance, to examine the causal mechanisms underpinning digital citizenship and democratic engagement. This workshop will explore: How European digital ecosystems can build long-term resilience to external disruptions Technical and institutional conditions for open, healthy civic debate Ways to foster constructive disagreement and deliberation online Socio-technical principles for strengthening democratic use of social media Insights from research on polarisation, cultural memory, and public trust
