The fourth annual Feminist Economics Summer School (FESS), held in Kampala, Uganda, from 30 September to 4 October 2024, marked a significant milestone in the IEJ's mission to advance feminist political economy across Africa. For the first time, the event was hosted in East Africa, in partnership with the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) and Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA). Under the theme Feminist Analysis and Interventions: Understanding the Social and Economic Crises in East Africa, the Summer School sought to address the unique challenges facing the region while maintaining its tradition of equipping activists, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners with the tools needed to apply feminist economic analysis to pressing socio-economic issues. FESS 2024 embraced a pan-African approach, grounding feminist political economy and African feminist thought in the unique challenges of East Africa. Participants examined how neoliberalism, structural adjustment policies, and international financial institutions exacerbate gendered economic struggles through austerity, inequality, and diminished social protections. This year the school had six key thematic areas: Social reproduction and care work; Access to land, nature, and the commons; Climate change and governance; Migrant labour and decent work; Social protection and austerity; and Militarisation and gendered war economies. Ultimately FESS 2024 served as a platform for collaboration, bringing together diverse voices to foster a critical network of feminist economists, activists, and policymakers across the continent. Participants were encouraged to envision and advocate for transformative policy solutions that prioritise human well-being.
