The Interaction of Ethnic, Regional, and National Identity

A Case Study of People with Dual Nationality in Donbas in the Context of the Ongoing War. A SSEES Research Student seminar with Qianrui Hu This presentation examined how common identity categories, such as ethnicity or nationality, do not resonate so well in the conflict in Ukraine, and how survey-based methodology may not be very successful in capturing all the nuances of identity. It provided an alternative methodology based on narrative identity and use the case of people with dual nationality in Donbas to illustrate the potential of applying this methodology. About the speaker: Qianrui is a first-year MPhil/PhD Student at UCL SSEES, broadly interested in Ukrainian Studies, Conflicts Studies, Political Sociology, and Political Geography.
