CCIR Students Spotlights: Minal on Modeling Dark Matter Density Profiles

Minal Matai is a student at The Madeira School in the United States. As captain of her school’s VEX IQ Robotics team, she has led her team to success at regional and international competitions, earning multiple awards for excellence in both engineering and autonomous programming. Beyond robotics, Minal has pursued science research through school fairs, where she has explored topics such as sustainable rocket fuels, plant growth in space, and endothermic reactions as alternative fuel sources. At the CCIR Academy, Minal’s research paper, Modeling Dark Matter Density Profiles in Spiral Galaxies Using Mass Decomposition and Symbolic Regression, investigates how dark matter is distributed within spiral galaxies. The study applies mass decomposition to separate visible and dark matter components and uses symbolic regression, an AI-driven mathematical method, to derive equations that describe dark matter density profiles. Her research aims to enhance the accuracy of galactic mass models and contribute to understanding the structure and behaviour of dark matter. She also shared her reflections on the project in a CCIR Academy Student Spotlight episode, discussing the mentorship she received and the lessons she gained from the research process.
