Minh Nguyen is a student at Emma Willard School in the United States. In addition to excelling in a rigorous academic environment, she has developed a strong interest in the ways social and economic forces shape human behaviour. Growing up, she observed how smoking remained common among older family members in Vietnam despite clear health warnings and rising costs. This led her to question why people continue harmful habits even when the risks are well known. Her interest lies at the intersection of psychology and behavioural economics, exploring how social norms, generational habits, policy environments, and cognitive biases shape consumer decision-making. She brings a cross-cultural perspective to her research, informed by her personal observations and academic curiosity. At the CCIR Academy, Minh’s research paper, Cultural, Social, and Economic Factors that Influence Smoking Prevalence in Vietnam Compared to the United States, examines how differences in societal norms, government policy, economic conditions, and access to tobacco products shape smoking rates in the two countries. The study analyses how context-specific influences contribute to patterns of tobacco use and considers how behavioural insights can inform more effective public health strategies. She also shared reflections on her research journey in a CCIR Academy Student Spotlight episode, discussing the guidance she received from her mentor and the insights gained through the research process.
