Yu Ming Lee is a student at Cate School in the United States. He has explored genetic engineering through iGEM, developing a strong foundation in gene expression and protein synthesis, alongside hands-on laboratory experience such as preparing buffers and solutions for experiments including PCR and gel electrophoresis. Alongside this, he has pursued independent study in biology and genetics, analysing protein structure and function, exploring genetic mapping and inheritance patterns, and supporting peers by developing lesson materials and teaching programming concepts within a club setting. At the CCIR Academy, Yu Ming’s research paper, Current Challenges and Future Directions in Cardiac Organoid Technology, examines the limitations and future potential of cardiac organoids. The study focuses on challenges including structural maturity, vascularisation, and functional integration, while also exploring how advances in this field could support heart disease research, drug testing, and regenerative medicine. He also shared his reflections on the project in a CCIR Academy Student Spotlight episode, discussing the guidance he received from his mentor and the insights gained through the research process. About Cambridge Centre for International Research (CCIR): CCIR is a research organisation registered in Cambridge, with an overarching mission to benefit the public by increasing the accessibility of knowledge. At CCIR Academy, we provide rigorous online research programmes for talented students: Students around the world, in intimate small groups or 1-on-1, work with leading researchers and professors from top US/UK universities to each produce an independent research paper that showcases academic passion and commitment.
