AEC Knowledge Management 👉 https://www.knowledge-architecture.com When I first heard this, it sounded kind of wild. Ellen Bensky and her team at Turner Fleischer are using knowledge management AI to help rewrite their internal knowledge base—not to make it sound more technical or polished, but to make sure anyone in the studio can understand it. That includes interns, new hires, project managers, and coordinators. Experts, despite their best intentions, suffer from what's called the curse of knowledge. They don't know what they know and it's often been a long time since they were novices. As a result, the content they write is full of hidden assumptions and unspoken dependencies. Acronyms go unexplained. Foundational concepts get glossed over. This makes a strong case for testing internal knowledge: Can someone new actually understand and apply it? That's exactly what Ellen's team is doing with AI, in a surprisingly effective way. They're not using AI to write intranet pages from scratch. Subject matter experts still create the content. But instead of relying on a slow, manual rewrite process, they're now training AI to simplify language consistently across the board through knowledge management tools. Every new and existing page is run through a custom GPT agent, designed to flag complexity and suggest revisions for AEC knowledge management systems. That agent is guided by content standards specifically created to help novices grasp the material. The result? A dramatic speed-up of what used to be a laborious editorial cycle. Before, each process had to be written, rewritten for clarity, reviewed by the expert, and tested with a beta group. Now, AI helps compress that loop while keeping all the quality checks in place. They've started with two knowledge communities—people & culture, and marketing—and empowered community managers to lead the charge. These folks already ensure content is current and relevant. Now, they're also making sure it's simple and clear with help from an AI assistant integrated into their knowledge management system. Teams identify high-priority pages, tackle them in small batches, and create new ones directly in the sandbox. And yes—they're even creating an intranet page on how to create simple, clear intranet pages and test them with AI. As I said, pretty interesting!
