How to make a Barrel Wine Rack from wine barrel staves. This is a simple woodworking project that doesn't require many tools or supplies and is affordable to make! For more info, project photos, and downloadable plans check out: http://www.diypete.com/BarrelWineRack The first step is to sand the wine barrel staves using 220 grit sandpaper. This is going to smooth things out and give us a nice finish. Next lay out the hardware and determine how you’d like to space it on the stave. I used bearing plates to dress up the staves a bit. Measure and mark for the placement. I measured 7 inches from each end and put a mark for where the holes will be drilled. The two inside racks are spaced 7 inches in from the outside racks. Lay out the hardware and determine the angle for installing each of the racks. I aimed for about a 15 degree slant to make sure the wine bottles are held securely in place. I did everything by eye, and once the angle looked about right I drilled a hole into the board at an angle. You can use a smaller bit to make sure the hole is drilled right at the center of each mark. Then use a larger bit to boar out the holes. Take your time and continue the process for all four of the u-bolt racks. Make sure they are all slightly angled up so they’ll hold the wine bottles in place. Then remove each of the u bolts and do a quick sanding of the staves to remove rough spots around the holes you just drilled. Put the hardware back in place to make sure things are spaced evenly and to decide how much too shorten the bolts. I measured up 1 1/2 inches from the bottom of the u-bolt and put a mark. Cut all four of the bolts using a reciprocating saw, hack saw, or tool that can cut metal. Make sure to clamp the bolts down for the process. The u bolts will each be 5 1/2 inches long after cutting. Then do a test fit of all the hardware to make sure the length looks good and will work well for holding each wine bottle. Apply a finish to the staves. I brushed on some golden oak stain from minwax. This is going to contrast nicely with the hardware. Next I applied a couple coats of polyurethane, and let the wood dry. Start assembling the barrel wine rack by putting a u bolt into each end of the stave. Use a nut, washer, and optional bearing plate on the top side, and a washer and nut on the bottom side. secure each in place using a wrench. Don’t overly tighten, as you may need to make adjustments to ensure all bolts and plates are line up evenly. Over tightening will also straighten the bolts and minimize the angle due to the curvature of the staves, so loosening the staves can help in slightly adjusting the slant of each bolt. Fasten all hardware and then hold the barrel rack against a wall to test that the u-bolts are at a slant to hold each wine bottle. Make adjustments as needed. Lastly, drill pilot holes on the ends of each stave for mounting. Use a stud finder and find 1 stud in the wall. We’ll be anchoring one stave into a stud and the other into the wall using drywall anchors. Drill a pilot hole for each of the drywall anchors and pound them into place. Secure using an anchor screw. Attach the other stave into the stud using 3 inch wood screws. This will ensure the wine rack is rock solid. ---- Looking for more DIY videos?
