California Here We Come. Mike's dad comes to visit, complete with plans to take his son on a trip of a lifetime around America. Thing is, Rita's already decided to take the boys on holiday to France, so something's got to give. This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 16th November, 1989. This is a great example to cite when talking about the differences between the early Mike and Angelos and the later ones. Although always a sitcom, more room was made for the emotional side of family life back when the show began, broadly speaking. And by "family life", I of course mean the realities of divorce and its aftermath - a theme quite dark for children's television, especially for the time. But the way they chose to represent the relationship between Rita and her ex-husband Tony is very interesting indeed: rather than showing the couple as sworn enemies out for petty revenge at every opportunity, the more realistic approach of portraying them as two otherwise reasonable people who just can't get along despite their best efforts is taken. That said, there is a bit of an undercurrent of Mike being used as a pawn by the pair of them, which makes it all the more gritty. Anyway, it's both funny and emotional, has a nice ending, and (being an early one), we're still being treated to Angelo's fundamental misunderstandings about life on 20th-century Earth - in this case, specifically about flying to your destination and how friendship isn't always absolute. Anyway, Mike's dad is played by Jeff Harding, who was something of a stock American on British TV for a while (good work if you can get it). Besides this recurring role as Tony, Jeff is probably most famous for his "Hi, I'm Ed Winchester" character on The Fast Show - though I remember him best as the LA priest who tries to recruit Father Ted in the very last episode of that particular classic. He was also a dad with a bit of mystery behind him in the 90s reboot of The Tomorrow People, which was by the same writers as Mike and Angelo, of course. Listen out for the original theme tune at the beginning (after a brief piece of Children's ITV continuity with Jerry Foulkes and Scally, incidentally), and a completely different song at the end. Being the final episode in the series, there's a good chance the commission for more hadn't yet come through, so everything was rounded off neatly just in case. Of course, ten more series followed! Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording. (To the best of my knowledge, the contents of this video have never been available commercially anywhere in the world.
