When the Rainforest Alliance Certified frog seal appears on products, it means that an ingredient specified on the packaging—such as cocoa—has come from Rainforest Alliance or UTZ certified farms. But it's not always possible for companies to separate certified ingredients from non-certified ones in their facilities and supply chains due to the complexity of processing or high costs involved. That's where mass balance comes in, ensuring that while certified cocoa might not end up in every individual chocolate bar, the supply chain is still buying cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms and including this ingredient in the overall manufacturing of its chocolate recipes. These are the benefits of the Mass Balance sourcing model: – More farmers can benefit from certification. It is usually very costly to keep certified cocoa separate from non-certified cocoa. Mass balance makes it feasible for more companies to source certified cocoa, which means more farmers benefit. – Equal impact on farmers. Where the cocoa ends up doesn’t make any difference to the farmer. What’s important is that they sold their cocoa as certified, and certification contributes to higher productivity, incomes and better living conditions. – It’s credible. Through the use of our traceability systems companies and consumers can be sure the certified cocoa comes from certified farms, even though it gets mixed with non-certified cocoa later on. – It helps scale up sustainability. Mass balance is also used for many other products, such as sugar, palm oil, and fruit juice, and in all of these sectors it has really helped with increasing the market for sustainability.
