The Last EMD F-Units in Freight Service

The EMD F-Unit once reigned supreme on North America rails. Produced by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1939 and 1969, only a handful are left in active service in North America. The few remaining are on tourist passenger operations or museums, but one short line freight operation in Ontario, Canada still runs them on a frequent basis. The Ontario Southland Railway, based near Ingersoll, Ontario, is the last remaining freight railroad using these vintage EMD units in North America. Built in 1957 for the Canadian National Railway, unit 1401 is now one of the two remaining EMD F-Unitson the Ontario Southland Railway. These two units, 1401 and 6508, have been rather unused over the past few years, except for a handful of times. However with recent management changes on the OSR, the 1401 has been seeing more use. In early December of 2025, I had the chance to chase the 1401 (an EMD F9A) as it led the St. Thomas Job back to Ingersoll. Seeing a vintage F-Unit leading any type of freight train in 2025 sure is a treat! Locations and description all in the video. In addition to the F Units, the OSR has a variety of classic early model diesel Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) power and EMD road switchers on the roster. One of which, the 182, is a MLW RS18u built for the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1958. I was able to catch it on a few occasions over the past few years, on the St Thomas Job and the Woodstock Job. Classic former Canadian Pacific EMD SW1200RSm switchers are also featured, as seen on the St Thomas Job in early 2024.
